SHORTHORN PLUS

The ShorthornPlus program is part of the ASA Appendix Registry (AR) Program which started in 1973. The intent behind it has always been a sound one – to promote and verify the Shorthorn influence in the commercial ranks. The on-going program was designed to strengthen the Shorthorn influence by increased numbers and germ plasm through the use of related and non-related breeds.

ShorthornPlus are considered to be animals with 1/4 to 7/8 blood. See the Blood Determination Chart below to help you with qualifying mating's. Initial entries into the ShorthornPlus Registry Program shall receive the prefix AR prior to registration number. This prefix shall be assigned to all cattle of the following percentages: 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 7/16, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8, 11/16, 3/4, 13/16, and 7/8, except that cattle with black markings or coat color cannot exceed the 1/2 percentage designation.
Please see Section 3B of the American Shorthorn Association Rules and Regulations found under the Registrations tab for complete ShorthornPlus registration and other registration rules.

SHOWING SHORTHORNPLUS

ShorthornPlus animals are not eligible to receive PACE points, but there is a Show Female of the Year recognized by the ShorthornPlus Foundation. This distinction is attained by points received from the three nationally recognized shows, American Royal, North American International Livestock Exposition, and the National Western Stock Show.

The ShorthornPlus Committee has designated three national shows for the eligibility to accumulate points.
1. The American Royal - Kansas City, Mo.
2. North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) - Louisville, Ky.
3. National Western Stock Show (NWSS) - Denver, Colo.

Guidelines for the 2009-2010 show season:
Heifer must be registered with the ASA as ¼ blood or higher Shorthorn.
If registered as less than ½ blood, the sire must be a registered Shorthorn

Guidelines for the 2010-2011 show season:
All ShorthornPlus animals must be 50% Shorthorn blood concentration or higher to be eligible to show at a sanctioned ASA show.
