How to collect & report data to the ASA Helpful Articles
Steps to get ultrasound data collected:
- Select a technician to scan your cattle and establish a date and time. For lists of technicians in your area, visit the participating ultrasound labs’ websites:
• The CUP Lab is www.cuplab.com
• UltraInsights is www.uicuplab.com
• ILIA Lab is www.designergenesusa.com
- Make sure all cattle being scanned are within the acceptable age window for the ASA (320-440 days of age). An Age in days calculator is available to help you determine an optimum day to scan. If cattle are scanned outside of this age window, no adjusted data can be calculated. Breeders will only receive actual results on these individuals and data cannot be included in the ASA Genetic Evaluation for EPD calculations.
- Print off the Chute Order Recording Form (CORF) and Barnsheet provided on the ASA website. All columns in red are required at time of scanning. To ensure quick results, have registration numbers and birthdates available to fill out the forms as completely as possible. For help with proper contemporary grouping and scanning protocol, consult your scanning technician or call the ASA office for assistance.
- Scan the cattle, using tattoo as the ID, not tag numbers or with-in herd IDs.
- Submit images, CORF/Barnsheet, and payment to the ultrasound lab and wait for your results to come from the ASA. If you have a sale or catalog deadline, you should scan the cattle at least 3 weeks prior to needing the information. Some data will take only days to process, but delays can occur.
- Ultrasound reports from the ASA will have actual and age-adjusted scan data (if possible). Breeders are encouraged to print age-adjusted data when it is available to ensure all animals are equally represented. If actual data is used, older animals are given an unfair advantage in sale materials, and information can be misleading to buyers
