KANSAS CITY, Missouri (May 15, 2018) – The American Junior Shorthorn Association will be hosting the National Junior Shorthorn Show & Youth Conference in Madison, Wis., June 26 – July 1, 2018. There will be 384 exhibitors with more than 720 cattle entries.
The theme of the NJSS is 50 Years Under the Big Top to celebrate the 50th Anniversary. On June 29 at 7:30 p.m. there will be a reunion held for the former junior board members to celebrate the anniversary of the show and youth conference.
“I think everyone involved with the first youth conference is amazed and proud at the growth we have seen since 1968,” said Ed Kruse, member of the first American Junior Shorthorn Association junior board. “The show has grown to become one of the best junior nationals in the country and it continues to grow each year.”
The show will begin June 26 as exhibitors move into the barns at Alliant Energy Center. On June 27, cattle and contest check-in will begin at 8 a.m. followed by the Cattleman’s Written Test, Speech Contest and judging of photography, arts & crafts, poster and graphic design. That evening, the NJSS will kick off with opening ceremony which includes state march, University of Madison-Wisconsin band, and a hypnotist.
On June 28, the Sullivan’s Showmanship Contest will begin at 8 a.m. and be followed by beef cook-off contest, team salesmanship contest and Sullivan’s Stock Show University.
On June 29, the morning will begin with the first NJSS 5K at 6 a.m. with all proceeds benefitting the Ronald McDonald house, followed by the judging contest, Lassie princess hour, Lassie 101/Lassie Social, Quizbowl, Sullivan Supply Fitting Contest, and the new State Cook-Off Contest.
The bred & owned female show begins at 8 a.m. on June 30, followed by the ShorthornPlus Prospect & Market Steer Show, Bred & Owned Bull Show, ShorthornPlus Female Show, Purebred Prospect & Market Steer Show. The awards ceremony will be at 6 p.m. The four new members of the AJSA Junior Board will be announced as the four retiring board members hand off their red jackets.
The Purebred Owned Show will begin at 8 a.m. on July 1. This will be the last day of the NJSS. It is free to attend the NJSS and watch the show. For more information visit juniorshorthorn.com.
